How can it possibly equal 1 when there wasn't even a number in the first place.

Well it makes it easier that you have matching denominators. 

You would form the answer like this:

Now all you have to do is minus those, but since they are both negative, it would kinda be like adding.

Then simplify, you can divide it by 3

What 3's can 4 and 3 make?

assuming you want the smallest one, it will be 12

You have to times the bottom by a number to make them 12, but what you do to the bottom, you must do to the top.

Now that you have common denominators, you can treat this like a normal subtraction. (You cannot subtract the denominators though, or else what was the point of finding a common denominator?)

Now since you have a negative number, you have to add that whole number you have.

All you would have to do is minus one from the 12 from the top of the second fraction because of your negative, and your answer would be 11/12

If you can make something out of 10 or 100, that makes it really easy.

In this case you can make it into 10. 2/5= 4/10 because what you do to the top you have to do to the bottom.

That =.4, because use the top number if it is out of 10 or 100.

Add 2 to that and you have 2.4

Well you could put it into the calculator, but a useful way I found was split the number into parts. This number is even so it is easy :D:D

Add these all together

500+150=650+30=680+1=681
