(2/3)-5a=(-1/3)(-9a+4)   multiply both sides by 3 to clear the fracrions

2 - 15a = (-1)(-9a +4)     simplify the right side

2 - 15a = 9a - 4               add 15a and 4 to both sides

6 = 24a                           divide both sides by 24

6/24 = a  =  1/4

OK....so we have...

9x + 100 =  1000     subtract 100 from both sides

9x = 900  dividee by 9 on both sides

x = 100

What ND has said is true......the first number has more zeroes between the decimal point and the first significant digit than the second one does.

Of course there is another way to determine which is larger.....just subtract one from another......if the result is positive, the subtracted number is the smaller. If the result is negative, the subtracted number is larger.

Notice that absolute value of a number n is = n if n > 0   and -n if n < 0.

And note that l3l = 3   and l-3l = 3

This implies that

(7/5x - 12) = 3       and  (7/5x - 12) = -3

Solving the first equation, we have

7x - 60 = 15

7x= 75

x = 75/7

And solving the second equation, we have

7x - 60 = -15

7x = 45

x = 45/7
