As long as we're talking about a function of x, a function has to pass what's known as the vertical line test.....this means that we can't have one "x" value associated with two different "y" values.  This would mean that a vertical line would cut the graph in two different places = not a function.

It is possible to have one y value associated with two different x values - think of a parabola that opens upward or downward.......the graph of that parabola is a function.

What is this equal to??   

Otherwise, there's nothing to "solve."

(x-4)/6 = (2x+5)/2

The easiest way to solve this is to just cross multiply...so we have

2(x-4) = 6(2x+5)      Expanding, we have

2x-8 = 12x+30         Subtract 12x from both sides

-10x-8 = 30              Add 8 to both sides

-10x = 38                 Divide both sides by -10

x = -38/10 = -19/5

To see this notice that a tail could occur on the first flip and then on any of the next three flips. So there are three ways that can happen.
