I'm going to change the "y's"  to "x's"

So we have

l3x+6l = l3x+3l

Factor a 3 out of each and we get

lx+2l = lx+1l

Take both things out of the absolute value bars. So we have

x+2 = x+1    and there's no solution to this

Now set x+2 = -(x+1)   .......So we have

x+2 = -x -1        Add x to both sides

2x + 2 = -1          Subtract 2 from both sides

2x = -3                Divide by 2 on both sides

x = -3/2  = -1.5

You're probably asking why this is so...

Consider some helium-filled balloons that have a lead weight attched to them. The balloons want to "rise" in a "positive" direction,  and the lead weight wants to pull the balloons in a "negative" direction - "downward."

What happens when we "subtract" the "negative,"  i.e., get rid of the lead weight??"  The balloons rise !! Thus, "taking away" a negative from a positive gives us a "larger" positive !!!

Remember it like this.......

Cutting away the weight - subtracting a negative from a positive - makes the balloons rise higher - the balloons get more "positive."

Let's break this down

We can write "what percent" as.....   x/100

"Of 12" means to multiply by 12

"Is 18" means "equal to 18" or   "= 18"

So we have

(x/100) ( * 12)  (= 18)     ......so.......  

x/100 * 12  =  18        divide both sides by 12

x/100  =  18/12           express 18/12 as a decimal = 1.5

x/100 = 1.5                 multiply both sides by 100

x =   150

So... x/100.....  =   150/100  = 150%

So 18 is 150%  of 12

Let's take this by parts........

The "2" shifts the basic sine graph "up" 2 units.

The "3" increases the amplitude of the basic graph by a factor of 3

Using the "1/2" we can find the period of the function, thusly:

(1/2)x = 2pi       solving for x gives us the period

x = 4pi    ..... so the "1/2" doubles the period of the normal sine function

The (x - pi)  shits the graph to the right by "pi" units
