-1/4(x-8)+1/8(x+8)=x-5

-1/4(x-8)+1/8(x+8)=x-5   multiply everything by 8 to clear the fractions

-2(x-8) + (x-8) = 8(x-5)   distribute across the terms in the parentheses

-2x + 16 + x - 8 = 8x - 40    combine like terms

-x + 8 = 8x - 40    subtract 8x, 8 from both sides  

-9x = -48   divide by -9 on both sides

x = 48/9 = 16/3
