Hello Guest!

one number "x" is 37 more than another number "y". If the sum of the two numbers is -103, then what is the smaller of the two numbers?

y + 37 = x

x + y = -103

y + 37 + y = -103

2y = -140

y = -70

x = -70 + 37

x = -33

y is less than x.

y < x

Let 'x' be the SMALLER number     the other number = x+37

the two added together = -103

x + (x+37) = -103

2x + 37 = -103

2x = -140

x= -70   (the smaller number)     the other number is  x + 37 =  -70 + 37 = -33
