jyotig: There is a total of 5,170 in an account. Mrs. Jefferson deposits $420 in her account and Mr. Jefferson deposits $621 in his account. Now they have the same amount of money. How much money did they each have at first?
Please just give me a method to solve this. Don't give the answer.
And no algebra!
Now that is an ask..... .......How do I explain this without algebra. ???
I might have to use pretend algebra. I will refer to the account totals as mum's and dad's
mum's + dad's = $5170
mum's + $420 = dad's + $621
If they both spend $420 then
mum's + $420 - $420 = dad's + $621 - $420
mum's = dad's + $201
Now I know that mum's + dad's = $5170 and that mum's = dad's + $201
so it follows that
dad's + $201 + dad's again = $5170
2 lots of dad's money + $201 = $5170
If the $210 gets spent then
2 lots of dad's money + $201-$201 = $5170-$201
2 lots of dad's money = $4969
So dad's money must be 1/2 this much.
If you know how much dad's money is then you can work out how much mum's money is
sorry I probably solved it more than you wanted me to but if I didn't i don't think you would have understood.
Do you understand?
How old are you anyway? This is really a 14year old's algebra question.
