For a party, Sue bought plastic plates for $3.65, cups for $4.25, three boxes of plastic tableware for $0.99 each, and a plastic tablecloth for $6.75. Sales tax is 5.5%. What is the total cost for Sue’s purchases, including tax?
Nope....you're correct, saseflower .......ther's only a slight difference in our answers because of rounding.....
Here's the essence of saseflower's answer........
[ Total Price of all Items] * [ 1 + the tax rate expressed as a decimal ]
And the tax rate expressed as a decimal = .055....so we have
[ 3.65 + 4.25 + 3(.99) + 6.75 ] * [ 1 + .055 ] =
[ 17.62 ] * [ 1.055] = about $ 18.59 rounded
First you need to add up all the prices
3.65 + 4.25 + 3(.99) + 6.75
Simplify
3.65 + 4.25 + 2.97 + 6.75
Add
17.62
Now multiply that by 5.5 to find out what the tax added is
96.91
Move the decimal over to the left twice
.96 cents
Now add that to 17.62
18.58
And there's your answer! :)
NOTE: There is a very likely chance that this is wrong because now I realize I'm not really sure why I multiplied and moved the decimal over. Just a warning :) It may just be right though! But maybe wait until someone else answers :P
