thanks sasflower, i have seen other people do it like you and it has always made me wonder.

This is how i would do it

$$\\\frac{3}{8}\;of\;56\\\\ =\frac{3}{8}\times \frac{56}{1}\\\\ =\frac{3}{\not{8}}\times \frac{\not{56}^7}{1}\\\\ =21$$

That is easier don't you think?

Divide 3/8 to find the percent

.375 or 37.5%

Now put that into a proportion

37.5/100 = x/56

Cross multiply

100x = 2100

Divide by 100 on both sides

x = 21
