First, take out any common factor ... this is 4x...so we have

4x (x -2)

That's it !!

The base of a 50 foot ladder rests 33.6 feet from the side of the house. How far up the side of a house does the top of the ladder reach?

This just a right triangle problem that we can solve with the Pytagorean Theorem..

The hypoteneuse is 50 and one of the legs is 33.6. So, to find the other leg, we have...

SQRT (50² - 33.6²) ≈ 37.03 ft up the side of the house

OK......this isn't too hard...we just have to remember a property of exponents.....aⁿ * a^m = a ^n+m

Notice what we have is really   5w²*3w⁸ - 5w²w⁶   = 5*3*w²*w⁸ - 5*w^2*w⁶ 

So this is just

15w¹⁰ - 5w⁸

And that's it !!

When I used to tutor, this is a question I always pondered, too, .......then I figured it out.......everyone has different abilities.

Foe instance, if you asked me to draw a picture, forget it!!! I have no talent in that direction.

Here's what I would tell you....practice!!.....most people aren't born "knowing" how to do math,  anymore than they're born knowing how to play a piano!!

Coming to the forum to ask questions isn't a bad idea, either. We might not have any Sir Isaac Newtons on here (but then again, I can't be sure), but we have a lot of people who are pretty knowledgeable!!

Hang in there....."math" isn't the "only" thing in life......
