Very interesting question. No high level maths required.
This question was posted a couple of days ago.

I think it is really interesting. It looks much more difficult than it really needs to be.

Some guidelines for question askers.
Please note:
1) Ask only one question per post.
2) When asking a question talk about what you have tried for yourself. Then people will take you more seriously and will be more able and willing to help.
3) If you get an answer

Are you allowed to use a calculator?

Beats me, what kind of calculator do you have?
In old calculators you put the number in and then press square root
In new calculators it is the other way around.

Let the numbers be x-1, x and x+1
set up a simple equation and then solve it.

let the number be represented by x
first one; 2x-3=7 (If 2x is bigger than 3) or 3-2x=7 (if 3 is bigger than 2x)
You can get both these answers in one statement using absolute value
The absolute value of (2x-3) = 7
It is a pity there is no maths type in this forum but you just put 2x-3 between 2 vertical lines to indicate absolute value.
How about you have a go at the others yourself. If it's too hard submit another reply and i will try to help you further.
Hint: Only one of the others needs absolute value signs.

Solve for x first
that is,
take 2 off both sides
then divide both sides by 6
then work out what 1 - the answer is.
Is this enough help?

That is a hairy question
The calculator treats -20 as -1*20
so -20^2 becomes -1 * 20^2 = -400
If you want to square a negative number it is better just to use brackets and that will overcome all confusion.
of course, (-20)^2 = 400

It will be 9.109 * 10^ something
You count how many places the point has moved. That's the number part.
Is the number very big or is it very little?
If it is big it will be +the number
If it is little it will be -the number

You can just do x^3 + y^3 using the expansion that maybe you should know (x+y)*(x^2 - x*y + y^2) and then do the substitutions
I got 20* root7
It took me just 4 lines of working
If I have helped but you would like more information let me know.

Don't you have a calculator with a fraction button? Or is it that you don't know how to enter fractions?
I see my role as a helper if I just give the answer without explanation then I am not helping you to learn.
