Very interesting question. No high level maths required.
This question was posted a couple of days ago.

I think it is really interesting. It looks much more difficult than it really needs to be.

It probably looks like a b/c
It is supposed to look like a mixed numeral only with letters.

A contractor wants to use 34 feet of molding, cut into three pieces, to trim the sides and top of a garage door. The long piece is 1.5 feet longer than three times the length of each shorter piece. Find the length of each piece.
Sounds like the short pieces are both the same length. Let them each be x feet long.
Three times the short piece is 3x feet
The long piece is 1.5 feet longer than 3 times the short piece. That must be 3x+1.5 feet
Add them all together and you get
x+x+3x+1.5 = 34
then you solve the equation to get the value of x.

The subway train offers access to all twelve intersections downtown. If every intersection is .75 miles apart and the train travels at 20 mph and spends 45 seconds at every stop to unload and onboard new customers, how long will it take to get from the first intersection to the last intersection?
When you do a question like this use a similar smaller question to see what is happening.
I h ave given you my solution to an alternate question.
I decided to look at the same question but with only 4 stop. I draw the train line on a piece of paper.
The distance travelled was 0.75*3 = 2.25miles
1hour/20miles * 2.25miles = 0.1125hours = 0.1125*60min = 6.75minutes = 6 minutes and 45 seconds
The number of stops where the train waited was only 2 because the first and last don't count.
stops = 2*45seconds = 90seconds = 1 minute and 30 seconds
6 minutes and 45 seconds + 1 minute and 30 seconds = 8minutes and 15 seconds.
This answer is for 4 stops only.
Try copying the method only do it for the whole 12 stops.
When I did it i got 32minutes and 15seconds but I haven't checked my working so if you get a different answer it doesn't necessarily mean that you are wrong.
Good luck. If you do some but get stuck you can ask for help again.

(12/81)/x=4/9
(12/81)*(1/x)=4/9
multiply both sides by x (to get x off the bottom)
then
multiply both sides by 9/4 (to get x by itself)
now get the answer on your calculator.

5b-4-8b-9
You can only combine like terms and the negative sign belongs to the term after it.
so put a circle around 5b
and a circle around -8b
5bricks - 8 bricks =? (it will be a negative number of bricks)
now just tack the answer to -4-9 on the end.
