I just worked out how to make an empty box of various horizonal size easily in LaTex.
This is not a recommended method, but other methods that I have tried here have not worked.

I am NOT 100% sure but I think

the adult population = employed + unemployed + others

The labour force = employed + unemployed

Labour force participation rate = (employed + unemployed) / The adult population

the unemployment rate = unemployed / (employed + unemployed)

multiply both sides by 100

0.02A-0.01 = 0.005A-0.002

0.02A - 0.005A = -0.002 + 0.01

i don't want to worry about all those decimals so i am going to multiply both sides by 1000

20A-5A = -2 +10

15A = 8

A = 8/15

Let a be the number of adults and c be the number of children

a + c = 173 => a =173 - c

8a + 4c = 1276

now substitute 173-c for a in the second equation and solve it.

Whenever two signs (+ or - ) are so close together that you can put a circle around them without anything else being in the way then

if the signs are the same replace them with a +
If the signs are different replace them with a -

So - - is replaced with a + (because the 2 signs are the same).

You cannot find the square root of a negative number so there are NO 'real' answers

If you study maths for long enough you will find out about imaginary numbers where i=sqrt(-1)
so if you are considering imaginary numbers then you can keep going with your answer

a = +-Sqrt (-19/7)

= +- sqrt (19/7 * -1)

=+- sqrt(19/7) * sqrt(-1)

=+- sqrt (19/7) i

(which is the same answer that the administrator found)
