It would have to be a regular decagon - all sieds the same length

Here is one formula

$$\\6x^2-36x^2\\
=(6-36)x^2\\
=-30x^2\\$$

If this is now equal as below

$$-30x^2=42x^2y$$

divide both sides by 6x^2

$$\\-5=7y\\
y=\frac{-5}{7}$$

So the only time they will be equal is when y=-5/7

Good answer anon although not many calcs do base three so you cannot just plug the numbers in and get an answer.    

I am going to write the question sightly differently

$Now it is very easy to see that y=6$\\

Not all fractions have repeating decimals.  What about 1/2  that is just 0.5   nothing is repeating :)

$${\mathtt{\,-\,}}{\frac{{\mathtt{1}}}{{\mathtt{7}}}} = -{\mathtt{0.142\: \!857\: \!142\: \!857\: \!142\: \!9}}$$       but this is a repeating decimal just like you said
