I tried this a few times and I kept getting the wrong answer even though I was doing the work right,someone please help!

I don't think that you really intended the z to be there, did you? I'll ignore the z and say that it is just 5.
anyway to start i'd add them

3x+2x+y-y=5+10
5x=15
x=3

Sub x=3 into either of the original equations (I'll use the second one)
2x-y=10
2*3-y=10
6-y=10
6-10=y
y=-4

therefore x=3 and y=-4

double check by substituting both numbers into the 1st equ 3x+y=5
3*3+-4 = 9-4 = 5 great, it's correct

I'm glad that you had a go Brooke , but you made a couple of mistakes

-5x + 2 <17

You treat inequalities just the same as equations,
except
1) If you swap sides you have to turn the sign around
eg if x>6 then 6<x

2) If you multiply or divide by a negative number you have to turn the sign around.
eg if -2x<10 then x>-5
or if x/(-2) > 6 then x<-12

3) if you turn both sides upside down.
eg, 3/x > 5/4 then x/3 < 4/5

And I think that covers it.

-5x + 2 < 17
now I'll take 2 off both sides - the sign stays the same.
-5x + 2 -2 < 17 - 2
-5x < 15
now I have to divide both sides by -5 and when you divide by a negative number the sign gets swapped
x > -3

Say you want to find the highest common factor of 36 and and 24

The pairs of numbers that make 36 are 1x36,2x18,3x12,4x9,6x6 and that's it

when I write factors down, I do them in pairs like this but I write them down in a different order I'll try to explain
1.....................................................................36
.....2...........................................................18
.........3.................................................12
................4..................................9
........................6,6 But we only want one 6 Now I know I have all ot them

So I've written the little factors from left to right, and the big ones from right to left

factors of 36 = 1,2,3,4,6,9,12,18,36
factors of 24 = 1,2,3,4,6,8,12,24

the biggest number that is in both lists is 12. You should put a circle around it.
therefore the highest common factor of 24 and 36 is 12.

I think that you just want to solve

4x - 1 = 0

You have to think about what needs to be done to get x by itself on the left hand side. Don't think about the right hand side.
First you need to get rid of -1, what is the opposite of taking 1 away? The opposite would be to add 1 on.
So add 1 to the left hand side. However if you add one to the left then you have to add 1 to the right or the the equation won't be equal anymore.
that is
4x - 1 +1 = 0+1
4x = 1
x multiplied by 4 = 1

now what do you have to get rid ot the 4, what is the opposit of multiplying by 4? Dividing by 4 is the answer.
so divide BOTH sides by 4 and you will have your answer
