How to make an empty rectangle in Latex

I just worked out how to make an empty box of various horizonal size easily in LaTex.
This is not a recommended method, but other methods that I have tried here have not worked.

I think that you have a bracket in a funny spot.
Before do any thing else I am going to show you how to use the sup button that is located above the smilies.
sup stands for superscript.

Write sin then hit the sup button. the curser will go exactly where it wants you to enter 2 then just click to the end of the function and keep going.
so your question is

( 1- sin ²x ) / cot ²x

What is this bit 1- sin ²x ?
Maybe it has got some thing to do with
sin ²x + cos ²x = 1 ?

What about cot x.
isn't cot x = 1/tanx ?
And, when you divide isn't that the same as multiplying by the reciprocal?

That's enough hints.
You see if you can do it.

No no Latex here
There are the few buttons at the top above the smilies.
I have been pushing really hard for everyone to use the sup and sub buttons. Especially the sup button
I'd really like you to give individual lessons to everyone who is not using them.
I actually don't know what some of the other buttons do.
Reinout-g did a couple of posts about them yesterday. I bumped them up so that they are located just after my last night's wrap. You want to take a look. I havn't digested them yet.

I sometimes write latex programs in Texmaker and then snip the output and post it in here. I suppose it is a bit of a hastle but it doesn't take that long when you get used to it.
Plus attachments are displayed much better here than they are in MHF.
I also use GeoGebra in the same way. Are you familiar with that program? It uses Latex in its ouput as well.

By the way, it is really nice to see you here. I laughed my head off when I realized who you were.

so
cycles/sec divided by metres/sec
=(cycles/sec) x (sec/metres) the seconds cancel out so you are left with
=cycles/metre

1 times 10 to the 30th Hz divided by 299792458
=10 ³⁰ / 299792458 cycles/metre
= 3.3 x 10 ²¹ cycles/metre Correct to 2 significant figures

If this was a question that someone was asking me I would put in a real lot of steps to make it easier to follow.
However, if I was doing it for myself this is what I would do.

5(a+4)=6-(a-9)
5a+20 =6-a+9
5a+20 = 15-a
6a+20=15
6a=-5
a=-5/6

Maybe I should check that you understand, the minus sign always belongs to the thing behind it. And, if there is nothing between a minus sign and a bracket, there is really an invisible one.
so I will do the RHS (right hand side) really slowly.
6-(a-9)
= 6 - 1(a-9)
= 6+ -1(a-9)
= 6+ (-1*a) +(-1*-9)
= 6+-a++9
= 6-a+9
= 6+9-a
= 15-a

And, on paper I would line up all the equal signs (underneath each other)
Do you understand all that.
Don't do the next one unless you completly understand the first one.

Do you want to try another one?
1-5(x+3)= -(x+17) - 2(6-x)

I am assuming that either you just don't want to, which is absolutely fine.

you don't know how to lay it out properly. If this is the case I can help you learn.
Setting out is very important in maths and it can make things much easier.
